Yoga days in Southend with Swami Nirmal
16th April, Mantra, sound healing.
Mantras
are specific sound vibrations. They can be used to directly influence the
mind, to bring about healing, alter perception, heighten awareness and awaken
the chakras. Sound and mantras have been used for these purposes in many
cultures all over the world from time immemorial. The science of sound healing
is being now rediscovered in our Western culture, which forgot its rich
heritage in this field due to the influence of Newtonian physics and other
factors. Modern quantum physics confirms that everything in the Universe
is made of vibration, matter being its most solidified form. Thanks to this
realisation it is now easier for us to understand how sound vibrations can
heal the physical body as well as influence the mind and its mood, quality
or concentration.
In the workshop we will use sound and specific mantras to bring about harmony
and healing to ourselves, others and the environment. We will use sound
and mantras in postures, pranayama (working with breath) and meditative
practices as well as in deep relaxation (Yoga Nidra). We will learn how
to increase our concentration and how to energise, revitalise and rejuvenate
our system through sound. We will experience the soothing, yet focusing,
effects of mantras and we will enjoy the beauty of these sacred syllables.
18th June, Pancha Koshas.
The
word "pancha" means "five" and "kosha" means
"sheath" or "body" in Sanskrit. According to yogic science
and tradition a human being is composed of five bodies or "sheaths",
each of these subsequently more subtle than the one preceding it. Yoga declares
that what you see of yourself with the ordinary sight is sustained by that
which you cannot see i.e. the very subtle, and not the other way round.
During our workshop we will use asana, pranayama and meditation (including
Yoga Nidra) to energise, and awaken all the koshas and gain a deeper understanding
of each of them and of their interconnectedness. We will aim at focusing
on and experiencing these subsequently more subtle levels of our being.
We will learn how to create the optimum conditions to experience states
of pure bliss - Anandamaya Kosha, the most subtle of the five koshas.
20th August, Tattwas.
The
science of Yoga postulates that the whole of creation is composed of just
five subtle elements and their combinations. These elements are called Tattwas.
As the human body and mind are made up of these elements, the deeper knowledge
of the Tattwas allows us an unparalleled insight into how these Tattwas
influence everything we do and think. This, in turn, offers us the possibility
of creating and maintaining a healthy state of balance in our system as
well as a chance to delve deeper into more subtle levels of our being and
experience our innermost self and its innate states of bliss and consciousness.
In the course of our Yoga Day we will learn what colours, shapes and qualities
correspond to each Tattwa, and the correlation between Chakras and Tattwas.
It will give us insight into how the Tattwas work in our system and make
us more familiar with them and their influences. We will also use our imagination
to visualise each Tattwa in turn as well as use their mantras to purify
them, and therefore to purify our whole system on a very subtle and profound
level. The day will focus on practice and will contain just enough theory
to make the practice more fulfilling.. The practice will comprise Asana,
Pranayama, Yoga Nidra and some sitting meditation of maximum 20 minutes.
The practices chosen will help purify the Tattwas and therefore increase
our general health as well as increase our receptivity and intuition.
